Decade of Lessons

January 28th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Announcements, Articles

This past Sunday was truly an epic on for CWC San Jose & Milpitas. We linked both campuses through the internet for the State of the Church Address. In a couple months, it will be a full decade that has passed since we planted CWC in San Jose. This past decade has taught me some wonderful lessons that I do not want to have to repeat in this next decade.

It has taught me:

price-tag.jpg

1.      The Cost Of Vision

Every vision has a price to be paid in order to accomplish it. There is a cost associated with each dream connected to our lives. Our passion must be greater than our desire in order to see the vision achieved.

Throughout the word of God we see Moses vision of freedom for his people was paid for by his discomfort by leaving Pharaoh’s palace. Joshua’s vision of leading his people into the promise land was at the cost of Moses, his mentor & friend dying. David’s vision for a temple for God’s presence was at great financial sacrifice and disappointment of someone else accomplishing the task. Jesus vision to save the world came at the cost of humiliation of the cross.

We have paid a steep price for the vision for the people of Bay Area. We left the comfort & security of our home & jobs in Manteca. We dealt with the loss of my daughter Jessica following her three year fight with cancer. Even some friendships were affected as a result of the move. Vision has a price.

2.      Must Plan For Success

We came to San Jose with the express determination to succeed but we had no plan for what to do after the initial success. We succeeded at planting a service not a church. If a church closes its doors and the surrounding community does not notice, did that church ever really exist?

We had not planned to fail however we did not have a phase two to follow our success which was a failure in and of itself. Every new venture we take now is done so with a follow-up plan to capitalize on the success. Success without a succession plan is failure.

promotion_965844.jpg 3.      Preparation Precedes Promotion

This is one of the deepest truths I have come to understand. It is a truth I try to instill in our interns. It is how you prepare that will determine your level of promotion. Opportunity will not wait for you to prepare yourself once it comes knocking at your door. We must practice like a champion if we are to play like one.

The one that saves his best sermon, best song, best effort for the big crowds will never have one. We must bring it strong daily or not bring it at all. Like a coach, God is watching our daily preparation and is determining whether or not we are prepared for the promotions He has in store. The promotion to be married, have a child, get a job, become a manager, own your own business, buy  a new car or start a new ministry.

God is first and foremost a steward. He manages the resources of heaven. He will not send blessings someone unprepared to take care or utilize them properly. Stop burying your gift and use it.

4.      Lastly, the Goal is BEcome Not To Come.

For the past decade we focused on getting people to church. Each event, illustrated sermon, production or give-away was focused on get people into the doors of a building. Our success or failure was based on the number of butts in the seats not in lives changed.

world.jpg The next decade my goal is to get people to BEcome the church.  Our focus is not on building a great building but building great people (not that there is anything wrong with builds, I would love another one!). Our focus cannot be on getting people into the doors to come to church but to get them to become the church everyday of the week.

If we are going to change the world, stands to reason we must be producing world changers.

The next decade will truly be a great one with the new campuses started, new churches planted, Life Houses established, people trained and as a result a world changed. We may not be able to change the whole world but you can change the one you live in.

Get ready for a great decade!

Thank You!

thank-you-small.jpg Huge thanks to everyone for all your efforts to help us reach & even exceed our goals this past Sunday. With your help we were able to bless over 125 children with bikes as well as bless over 200 families with Christmas gifts. Your sacrifices help ensure that this Christmas will be a memorable one for many underprivileged children this holiday season.

Each child will someday grow up and the bike and the gifts will break, rust or collect dust but the memories of God’s love expressed through your efforts will forever be in their hearts to treasure. In each trying time they face in the years to some, they can still hold on to hope because of what God provided for them through you.

On behalf of CWC, Angie and I, we would like to once again express our deepest gratitude and humblest thanks for all your love. May your Christmas lights shine brighter, your credit card bills be lower and your joy be overflowing.

Much grace;

PD & Angie

There Is Still Time

December 15th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Announcements

smile.jpg The economic climate has produced extremely difficult times for many. The result has produced even more stress than usual during this Christmas season. The pressure to buy a gift that also reflects the value of the person without going bankrupt in the process has us overextending and overspending.

I am convinced that if we all put our problems in a big pile, we would each pick back up the one we came with. We all have issues but when we give to those who are less fortunate, it somehow makes our problems & challenges a bit smaller.

childrens-bike.jpg Here are just a couple of children you can help:

§          Trinidad is a five year old boy who has been diagnosed with Leukemia, his parents are struggling financially due to his medical bills. He and his younger brother, who is 2 years old, only chance at a Christmas is you.

§          The Barajas family has five children who ages range from 6-14, who lost their mom due to cancer recently. They are struggling financially as well as emotionally as they get through their first Christmas without their mother.

§          We have a single mom who is raising her three nephews as well as her own children in an effort to provide a stable environment. Her sacrifices for her nephews have made Christmas gifts unrealistic.

You can make a huge difference. Together we can give hope to the hopeless. We are budgeting $50.00 per bike (including a helmet), any amount can make a huge difference in the life of another. Thank you!

Would you consider making a difference?

Season Of Giving

December 3rd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Announcements

The Christmas season is all about giving. It is a celebration of God sending His only Son, Jesus to a world in need. We commemorate this time of year by doing what God did and giving our best to those in need. I realize that in these challenging economic times that we do not have the surplus we have grown accustomed to.

However, we still live in the richest country in the world. The fact you have running water, a roof over your head and food to eat makes you wealthy according to the global standards of life. You can help spread the message of Christmas by helping us touch those in need this Holiday Season.

Here is how you can get involved:

mountain_bikes.jpg On December 20th, two very special events will occur during our annual Christmas production called, “Christmas with the Family”. First, our annual partnership with Toys for Tots will provide 400 gifts for needy children. We are gathering names & sign-ups for these toys. In addition, we will give away 100 bikes to inner city children who other wise would not have a Christmas.

You can help by donating a new bike, money to purchase one or help collect funds from co-workers, family or friends to reach the goal of 100 bikes. One hundred percent of all funds will go directly to this project.

winter_jackets.jpg Also, following our Thanksgiving Banquet for the homeless, we discovered that many of those we served are in need of winter coats. We are asking you to search your closets for unused jackets that are in good shape. You coats that are taking up space in your closet can be of huge benefit to someone in need. Please, if you would not wear it don’t give it.

Donations can be dropped off at our Milpitas offices at 241 South Main St in Milpitas or mailed in to CWC, 241 S. Main St, Milpitas, California 95035. For more information contact us at 408.263.0406.

Let’s share some Christmas joy

Living A Legacy - Pastor G

June 26th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Announcements

img134.jpg This past week, my family and I traveled to Denver, Colorado to join in on the retirement celebration for Pastor Elias Gonzales who retired after thirty-eight years at the same church. Back in the summer of 1986, my junior year of college, I worked as a summer intern at First Spanish Assembly of God. Pastor G (As he was affectionately known) welcomed me with open arms, provided me with a wonderful family to stay with, a salary and a priceless experience.

That summer I grew. I acquired knowledge that could not be learned in a book. It was knowledge that could not be taught but caught, caught by watching & gleaning from a well seasoned minister.

I caught the importance of. . .

§          Vision

When I was there the church was in their old building. The plans & blueprints for 1st Spanish’s new building were being drawn up. Conceptual drawings and renderings of the church’s exterior were all that existed materially.

Pastor G saw the end before he started. I walked the new property and saw the completed building in the eyes of a visionary. I caught the reality that the leader must see the end before others and then help them see it too. Years later I returned to walk the halls & preach on the platform that was once only a imagination in the heart of a man.

§          Humor

The man loved to laugh and to make people laugh. You could always count on a smile and a laugh when Pastor G was around. In my short time there he found certain habits or sayings of mine to exploit and make fun of. To this day when I see him those sayings & habits are still brought up. His humor was a form of “carino”.

In Manteca, for Master’s Graduation, Pastor G came to watch his son Jason’s graduation. Manteca in June can be extremely hot. This summer night was no different. The air conditioners were not working & Pastor G sat in the front pew soaked from perspiration. Like a penguin in the desert, sweat poured from his brow and he attempted to control the flow with a hand towel from his hotel room. When the church was asked if there were any visitors present that night. Pastor G responded, “If there are they won’t be back. It’s hotter than hell in here!” That’s where I learned a pastor can say hell!

§          Love

Pastor G’s love is legendary. He possesses a great love for people. I observed him interact with elders and children with same passion and attention. He valued people and people in turn valued him. I believe his effectiveness as a preacher was due in part to his love for the people. People will respond to someone who loves them. They may not like what he says but they know that it is generated by love.

His love for people was on display on night I preached and a drunk man walked in off the streets and began a profanity laced prayer that would shock any Hell’s Angel. I tried to quiet the man until Pastor G walked up, touched his shoulder and looked into his eyes and said, “that was the best prayer I have ever heard because it came from his heart.”

§          Family

For a man who lived in a glass house for half a century, he showed me the value of family. He has always referred to his wife as “Lovie”. His public expression of his love for his wife was on display every time he mentioned her name. If one of his own children were not serving God at the time, his love did not falter. His family was not his ministry they were his priority & passion. His example of juggling the roles of pastor & family man I still value to this day.

§          Lastly, Commitment

You don’t reach this kind of milestone absent of commitment. Over the years I have heard of the struggles & trials that he faced as the lead man. He has shared some of those times with me in private visits over the years. Troubles that would have cause a weaker man to quit. Yet, he would not allow those issues to overwhelm him. He made a choice years ago to pastor these people, so when the trials arose, there was no decision to make as to continuing. The choice had been made years ago. No quitting. This is not a job, this is my life.

The church in Denver has lost a great leader but his legacy continues in the lives of the people that he has touched. He may be retiring from the church but not from ministry. We are not what we do, we do what we do because of who we are. Pastor G is and will always be a minister. I must become a Pastor G in the lives of those around me.

True success in ministry is not what we have when we are done, but rather what we have given away.

Thursday evening we traveled to Waterford, CA (don’t ask, I still don’t know where that place is!) for my daughter, Jazmine’s High School graduation ceremony. The family and I cheered and shouted as Jazmine’s name was read & her future goals in life were conveyed through the PA system.

Although Jazmine had finished high school in December she joined other students for her graduation ceremony here in the month of May. She initially didn’t want to go to her ceremony because she saw it as a step backwards being that she had already started college.

sitting.jpg However, her mom & I were able to convince her that by taking part today she will create memories for tomorrow. Everyday is a new opportunity to create memories of a lifetime for a lifetime. Don’t miss out on life’s moments. Take advantage of every opportunity to create these memories for you and your loved ones.

Don’t just go through life, live it!

New Birth!

April 22nd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Announcements, Uncategorized

With the launching of the new Spanish service at the Milpitas campus, it was necessary to send our best, in the form of Pastor Benjamin Cortez, to lead them in worship. He along with the Spanish worship team now minister at 9 am at the Milpitas campus which left a huge void in San Jose.

Not to worry. This past Sunday morning we unveiled our seventh worship team of Christian Worship Center and latest addition to the Worship Nation team, under the direction of Jonathan “Tana” Nuia, a third year staff member of San Jose Master’s Commission. They brought a fresh new sound with a strong vocals and a great combination of three guitars, four keyboards, bass & drummer.

As great as their sound was, it was the heavy anointing that that this team carried that moved the early service at the San Jose campus. Their hard work & effort was greatly evident as they ministered. I was moved by their music and touched by their heart for God. They sang with passion & excellence. I cannot express just how proud I am of you all. Keep opening the heavens.

Like a proud father of a new born baby, I want to show you off to the world!

Great Weekend

April 15th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Announcements

I wish every Sunday was Easter Sunday.

This past weekend was definitely a historic event for CWC San Jose family. I am proud of the CWC team as they worked diligently to ensure such a great win this weekend. We enjoyed an incredible weekend of ministry. From the Passion Parade to filling 20,000 Easter Eggs, Men’s breakfast to Spanish outreach and four services to three Easter egg hunts . . . incredible time & effort.

Passion Parade

passion2.jpg On Good Friday a crowd of Jesus freaks gathered to pay tribute to the King of Kings & the Lord of Lord by walking a mile and a half recreating Jesus trek to Golgotha. On one of the Bay Area’s busiest highways the parade proceeded to bring people out of their offices & restaurants, bring others to tears and others to stare in disbelief. No Easter bunny, no eggs just the raw expression of God’s love for us.  To see the Passion Parade click here.

Good Friday Service

The Good Friday Service began where the parade ended at the CWC Milpitas Campus. Those in attendance experienced intimate worship, then a dramatic presentation of the last seven words of Jesus on the cross, with each word expounded on by our ministry team (IN fact my wife Angie spoke for the FIRST time!). They finally the service concluded with communion. Awesome time!

Resurrection Sunday

This Sunday commemorated the birth of a new service at the CWC Milpitas campus . . . the CWC Spanish Church. Now every Sunday morning at 9 am at the Milpitas Campus we have a Spanish service under the direction of Pastor James Landa. Their service is followed by the English congregation at 11:17 under the leadership of Pastor Anthony Vasquez. Together these men are reaching the North Bay for Christ.

In San Jose we recorded record numbers in attendance in both services. The production “The Sacrifice” written & directed by Bre Belaski was nothing short of a Broadway production. The cast & crew were flawless and the live music was inspirational. The Gospel was shared precisely and effectively.

Easter Egg Hunt

egg-hunt.jpg In San Jose & Milpitas, the Easter Egg Hunt was a highlight for the 450 children who came out of the wood work to gather up the over 20,000 candy filled eggs and the various prizes that included Disneyland tickets & Toys R Us gift cards. The smiles on the faces of the children were well worth the effort. Everyone left a winner.
